Cointreau Noir

Mmmm… cocktails. It is the weekend, so what better time to put your feet up, mix a drink and spend some quality time on your couch? If throwing on a fabulous frock and some killer heels is more your style, get out your cocktail shaker and stir something yummy before a night on the town.

This week I’m indulging in Cointreau Noir, a decadent brand extension of Cointreau (the one you soak strawberries in for a deliciously naughty dessert), consisting of orange liquor and Fine Champagne Cognac.

Cointreau Noir Sangria

At last weeks launch at Captain Melville, we were able to indulge in some delightful Cointreau cocktails, including Sangria. Delightful!

But my fave was the Cointreau Noir and Apple-Soda, and now you can make it at home….

60ml Cointreau Noir
120ml cloudy apple juice
60ml club soda
Pour ingredients over ice in a highball glass.
Stir briefly and garnish with a slice of Fuji apple.

Remember, drink responsibly!

Meredith’s Perfect Ponti Dress

I am currently in recovery mode from the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival and catching up on sleeping, eating, exercise and my vitamins, whilst also doing all of last weeks work, and this weeks work. Its crazy busy and all I want to do is lie around in my tracksuit pants but there are things to be done.

One could never be seen to be dashing about town running errands in trackies, so I am sharing with you a secret – I have found the perfect corporate/comfy/multifunctional frock.

Meredith has been making clothes for 50 years, but the current Autumn/Winter collection oozes comfort and versatility. The Ponti Dress is my new favourite EVERYTHING outfit. Easily dressed up with heels and earrings, or down with flats and a tote bag.

I dashed about the Business Seminar at VAMFF last week with a mobile phone in each pocket and yesterday I went from a work meeting, to grocery shopping, to lunch, an afternoon at the desk, then dinner and a movie all in the same comfort, warmth and stylishness of this LBD.

Now, I realise this pic is a little bright, but it was early in the morning, I’m tired, and it’s shot from below – but I just couldn’t wait to tell you about my perfect Ponti Dress. It’s a bit stretchy so you can fit your lunch, and long enough to cover a multitude of sins. A bargain at $179 – buy it now and it’ll last through Autumn, Winter and Spring! Available XS to XL (I’m wearing an XS). Tan flats by Sambag.

The French Facialist

There is a truth universally acknowledged that French women don’t get fat. They also don’t age. I’m pretty sure they look amazing in all kinds of light, and they are impeccably dressed, ALL THE TIME. My aspirations to be a French woman might only be achieved by changing my name when I’m married, but in the interim, I may have discovered the secret to the French skincare regime.

The French Facialist, Christine, is the epitome of fabulous. A skin expert, she has won awards and written books on the topic, and now practises her unique facials in Prahran, which is conveniently local for me. Someone who not only has the ability to treat you like a queen, Christine takes the time to analyse your skin and educate on little changes we can make to improve the appearance of our skin well into the ageing process.

Christine

I arrived on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, after a weekend away at the races where much makeup was worn and much alcohol consumed. I shuddered at what I thought I’d be told off about, having just turned 30 and probably not giving my skin the attention it deserves.

Christine was divine, in asking questions about my routines and providing subtle suggestions as to what I might do to improve my skin care. Based on her dewy complexion, I felt she must be onto something, and listened attentively.

We then commenced the Soin de Peau Royal – the Le Royal Facial. This signature treatment lasts 90 minutes and used LED light therapy to encourage skin detoxification and cellular rejuvenation. There was cleansing, hot towels, steam, creams, exfoliants and MASSAGE. Yes, MASSAGE. Hands, feet, scalp – this treatment really is the works. I suspect I even fell asleep at one point.

Following the treatment, Christine advised some products that would be good for my skin – my biggest problem is hydration (drink your water too, ladies!!) and I learnt that many of the over the counter products, while adequate, are not enough to provide the levels of hydration my ageing skin needs. I’ve been using my Auriège Paris products for a week now, and they are divine.

I immediately rebooked for a month from now, and are counting the days until I get to experience this wonderful treatment again. A must for anyone who cares about their skin and wants a ‘proper’ treatment, rather than a quick fix facial.

My thanks to Renault for this lovely gift! Visit Christine at First Floor, 296 Malvern Road, Prahran in Victoria, Australia (enter from Essex Street) or call 0410 556 557.

Fabulous Frock Friday

marchesa

This Marchesa floral print silk-gazar dress is so delightful, I just want to dance around a garden in it. Although  at close to $7000, I probably wouldn’t wear it out of the house for fear I’d snag it on something. But in case you have $7k lying around for dresses to dance in, get it at Net-a-Porter.

Collins 234 Style Workshop

Fashion folk all over Melbourne are gearing up for the annual, but new, Virgin Australian Melbourne Fashion Festival, with March being the month of mayhem in our fair city.

Amidst all the chaos and ticket buying, I’m thrilled to be able to offer you a free event, one at which I will be on the stage! I don’t pretend to have oodles of wisdom to impart to you – I’ll let uber stylist to the stars Philip Boon do that – but we’ll have a chat about the fun of fashion, and a good night will be had by all.

Book your tickets via the website, www.collins234.com.au, and we’ll see you there!

Fabulous Frock Friday

fabulous frock friday

It’s not technically a frock, but this is the ‘most dressed’ outfit from the Chateau L’amour bridal lingerie shoot that I recently helped out on – and this skirt is too divine not to share. You can see the whole series of snaps by 35mm photography at Polka Dot Bride. Many thanks to Sarah from Style Melbourne for having me along on the shoot!

The Blow Out Bar

This weekend, I attended my second wedding in two weeks. It seems February is THE time to get married, and everyone is doing it – or at least everyone I know. I’m just turning 30! (What’s the rush?!)

With all the events I’ve had of late, my creativity in the hair department is at it’s end. Failing a ponytail with a bit of height, my not-cut-since-Christmas locks are a bit tired and flat, overworked (and underpaid) with heat and product. I put in an emergency call to the Blow Out Bar for a stylish wedding do and got ready to RE-LAX.

After a quick sesh at the Napoleon Perdis Lifestyle store at the Como Centre for a wedding make up look, I arrived at the Blow Out Bar only knowing I wanted something not too ‘done’ – which I am sure stylists hear all the time, probably a bit like asking for a Big Mac with a diet coke.

Blow out bar

My stylist Aiden showed me some pictures and I oohed and ahhed, and then told him to do whatever he thought would look good and get it ‘up’, out of the weather. Magazines were thrust into my hands and I sat in the opulent surrounds while Aiden set to work. The TV was also showing a movie, with teletext to follow over the music, and within minutes I was immersed in back issues of Shop Til You Drop, and ‘Identity Thief‘.

Aiden curled and twisted, pinned and spritzed. He added a donut (hair speak for ‘you don’t have enough hair’) and braids for some fun at the front. It was the exact right mix of formal and fun. Fabulous.

Braids are all the rage at the moment, according to Simone Van Haltren, the General Manager at BlowOut Bar Toorak, with celebs Scarlett Johansson being famous for braid crowns, Blake Lively often rocking the fishtail braid and Sienna Miller, Jessica Alba and Charlize Theron all sporting the look of late. It seems the braid is the new top knot, effortlessly combining the more relaxed natural look with a ‘done’ but ‘undone’ style.

I ask whether braids are particularly suited to any face shape or hairstyle, and Simone tells me that braids are best in blonde and medium brown hair, as highlights and differences in tones show up best, but that any face shape can rock the braided look. The stylists at Blow Out Bar can assist in working out whether the hair should be parted in the centre, or the side, and whether the majority of the hair should sit at the back or to either side.

I leave the Blow Out Bar sufficiently relaxed, and in need of a video store so I can see how Identity Thief ends. The wedding was divine (as weddings are!) and my hair stayed put for a good twelve hours, collecting compliments along the way.

And just in case you were wondering (as I was!), what the difference between a plait and a braid is? A braid incorporates whole sections (big or small) of the hair and can be done in many different shapes and forms – the 3 strand braid, 4 strand braid, 5 strand braid, up- close to the scalp, away from the scalp, fishtail or waterfall. A plait is more simplistic and usually only uses 3 strands. It’s much more limited with the choice of shape and sectioning patterns, a plait can not be done close to the scalp and has a more loose appeal to the eye.

Karen Millen AW 14

Yesterday I was so cold in the office, I had to pop down to the Red Cross second hand store to get a jumper, lest my poor freezing arms fall off from cold. Who would believe it’s February and just a week or so ago, we were sweltering in 40 odd degree heat? As a bigger fan of Autumn Winter fashions than I am of Summer (give me an oversized knit over a playsuit any day!) it thrills me to see all the warm woolies dropping into store about now.

London label Karen Millen has always done Winter well but the latest collection is a bit of a standout, and I’ve popped a few of my favourites here for you to looksee – just click to see the full size pic. Visit the website to see the lookbook in full.

With a bit of a new direction for the brand in 2014, the new Karen Millen aesthetic sees a more stripped back approach focusing on casual clothes and separates such as the denim and leather ranges, maintaing the signature attention to detail, creativity and craftsmanship that the brand is famous for.

They’ve also put together this little campaign video, which is a bit moody but features some gorgeous girls from London on the brink of being international models.

Available at Karen Millen stores and Myer concessions nationally.
