Style Farm Spring Racing Shoot

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a princess. As I grew up, I realised that the chance of that happening were slim to none, and so I turned my attentions to being an actress or model. But since I’m not very tall, and not particularly talented in the drama space, I had to push that ambition to the side also, and focus on the things I was good at, like writing and being slightly amusing in person.

In the past few months, my inner child has been allowed out as Meagan Harding gave life to my long buried dreams of being a model. From the shots of me for this website, to my latest Spring Racing shoot, it has been THE BEST FUN to be in front of the camera. I’m too smiley to ever be successful on the catwalk, but maybe there is some life in this would be model yet.

Here are a few of my fave shots from the Spring Racing shoot. I totally encourage you to head to Meagan’s blog, Style Farm, and read about how she styled all the outfits and where you can get them yourself.

And if you once dreamed of being a model – don’t be shy – call Meagan and she’ll make you look like a superstar!

Kmart gets cool

Following in the footsteps of our favourite department stores, Kmart has stepped up and has a spring summer offering that is fashionable and affordable. With most pieces under $25 (and starting at as little as just $7!), there are fashion forward items to have you in something new everyday of the week.

Kmart promo

At their launch event on Monday, Kmart talked about the coming trends for the season, and how they want to make fashion affordable for the whole family. Lot’s of tropical brights make up the collection, and the new advertising campaign is so catchy, you can’t help but get excited for the brand.

And you don’t even have to spend a lot to pull together a whole outfit. I love these pants ($9!) and they look fab with the turquoise and pink – a Sunday BBQ special!

Accessories like this purse (Missoni, anyone?!) and these shoes (which remind me of my Sachi sandals circa 1997) are both just $25, and perfect for Spring Racing.

You can win your way to a few new pieces for your wardrobe, just by snapping a pic of yourself in the latest clothes and accessories from Kmart, and posting it to Instagram. They are giving away a $30 voucher everyday from 2 Oct to 19 Oct, and $200 Kmart voucher state prizes! See the @kmartaus Instagram account for more info on how to enter.

Simply Vera at Harris Scarfe

Gosh darn I love Instagram and Twitter. It delivers me the most delicious news and fashion tidbits from around the globe as soon as I wake up in the morning, often in full colour photos and videos. And this week it let me know that the darling Vera Wang has done a collaboration with local department store Harris Scarfe.

Following in the footsteps of collaborations the world over (and locally, Peter Morrissey for Big W and Stella McCartney et al for Target), the Simply Vera line starts at a price point affordable to all, $59.95 for ballet flats, $69.95 for a knit cardi, and features signature Vera stylings.

I’m totes in love with the dress on the left in this pic, and can’t wait for the drop in October. Check out the collection from the 14th at pop ups in Westfield centres – Doncaster in Melbourne and Bondi Junction in Sydney. All Harris Scarfe stores will have stock from October 20.

The A-Z Of Spring Racing

I’m hanging out for the Spring Racing Carnival. It’s that one week of the year where fashion and sport become one, and the word ‘marquee’ doesn’t mean a plastic tent. You might remember I’ve been doing some writing for Urban List, so I put together your form guide on all things Spring Racing. You might like to take a look!

Spring Racing

This article first appeared on The Urban List, September 2013

The Spring Racing Carnival is so close I can almost smell the roses at Flemington. While you might not yet have the frock, or the hat, it’s never too early to start planning all the other stuff that comes with a season of fashion and horse racing.

So, to help with your preparation, we’ve put together an (almost) A to Z guide of where to shop, snack, sleep, indulge and imbibe during Spring Racing.

The New Renault Clio at MSFW

You know how you can buy the little trees that hang from your rearview mirror in the scent of ‘new car’ smell’? That’s about as close to a new car as I’d ever been until I was picked up last week in the new Renault Clio and whisked off to a seriously stylish soiree at The Blackman Hotel in Melbourne.

The New Renault Clio

My poor bruised RAV4 sat in the street while doors were opened for me and I zoomed off in the oyster grey Clio for a night of fashion and fun with fellow Melbourne bloggers.

The Drivers

Driver Gil (who, poor soul, didn’t know what a blogger was!) whisked us off and explained to me some of the very cool features of the car while we waited at the lights. Had I noticed the back door handles were missing? (Note, not actually missing, cleverly disguised so it looks like a two door!)  Or perhaps I’d like to test the stereo, which can be customized to sound like a V6, a motorbike, an old style car OR EVEN A SPACESHIP!!

Arriving at The Blackman, and heading straight for the Penthouse, we sipped Jack Rabbit sparking (I was VERY grateful for a driver!) and munched on adorable canapés, overlooking Albert Park Lake and the coast.

Me with Em Rusciano. I love her!

MC Em Rusciano regaled us with how in love with the Clio she was before launching the Renault Clio Pose Off – a competition where an ugly selfie could win you a car!

How you ask? Simply take a pic of yourself looking less than perfect, upload it to the Renault Clio Pose Off Facebook page and take seriously stylish to a whole new level. Viola!

Melbourne Bloggers en masseLove this shot from Lady Melbourne of the Melbourne Bloggers who were in attendance. L-R: Lauren Brain, Phoebe Montague, Sarah Willcocks, Me!, Erica Moloney, Cheryl Lin and Emily Collie.

And if you are too vain to pose and just want to buy one of these babies, they come in at under $20k, have a stack of features you can design yourself, don’t do badly in the safety or environmental stakes and look AWESOME.

A new home…

Welcome to the new home of Sarah’s Style Emporium!

I’m chuffed you’ve come to visit and hope that you’ll come back on a regular basis. After all, if you’ve been reading for four and a half years and you are not bored yet, I must be doing something right!

Sarah Kempson

This new look is thanks to all of you – if it wasn’t for your support, friendship, telling your mates about me and wanting to work with me, I’d have had no reason to upgrade – and certainly not the capacity to make a living out of doing something I love – WRITING!

And so here we are. Sarah’s Style Emporium will still be a home to all things food, fashion and Melbourne, while sarahkempson.com allows me to have a professional front for all the amazing clients out there who are yet to meet me.

sarahkempson_logo_1

A quick (but massive!) thank you to Meagan Harding Photography for taking ace pictures of me, and Mat Fitzgerald at Split Strategy for making all the bits that make a website work, work. And for my fab new logo! To Sarah, Marissa and Carlie, for being the first ones to critique the new digs and for being fabulous friends, and to everyone who has recommended my work to someone over the past 18 months – thank you! To Sandi at Onya Magazine, thank you for letting me write for you in the first place and getting me started, and to everyone else who has read my words and liked them, loved them, laughed at them or been reminded of something, thanks to you too.

Finally, thank you to my parents, who were the first ones to ever read my blog and who always thought I’d be a writer (even when I was dabbling at Mitre 10) and to Breece, who gave me to the confidence to believe I could leave my 9 to 5 and still afford to buy shoes just doing what I love.

I love ALL of you.

Raise your glass and cheers to the next chapter!

Gok Wan for Target

I’m a Tar-jay girl from way back. I can still recall a pair of khaki coloured shorts I picked up at Target for my Year 9 school camp – I wore those things to death for the next two years. Similarly, now I own three navy blue target cap sleeve tee shirts (yep, they are all the same!) just because I never want to be without a clean one.

The ads for Target featuring Gok Wan hit our screens a few weeks ago, and I got into the spirit of things, making suggestions by yelling at the TV, and making ‘in’ jokes about bangers (and as a girl with girls, I can do that. I hear what Gok is saying!)

So I headed along to the Gok Wan meet and greet last week, just a little bit star struck, and a lot excited about the realm of possibility for the Target of the future.

The Target Australia PR team gave us buyers and designers to chat to about the latest in store collections, but we were all truly loving Mr Wan,             whose charisma and enthusiasm for working with Target was evident – and then he spilled all their secrets.

We talked about the Aussie love of basics, about how Target wants to give teens ownership of their outfits and that in time, Target hopes to put together collections that compete with the likes of Zara, TopShop and H&M.

Gok made us laugh, shared his fashion wisdom and his ‘must haves’ for this season: a stiff white collared shirt; a pair of straight indigo jeans; a pair of good flats!; something slightly unusual, with disconnected tailoring and a masculine pair of trousers, 7/8 length.

Anything in yellow and black is big this year, so check out the Hot Options, Free Fusion and Maax collections at Target to get a fashion forward look for Spring Summer.

Boohoo.com Aussie Exclusives

Last week was all about Aussie fashion at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week and while I am coveting some of the gorgeous pieces that made their way down the catwalk, I was privvy to a little preview of the exclusive boohoo.com Australian edit recently, and there are a few things in there that I want in my wardrobe as well.

boohoo.com have been servicing the Australian market for just over 12 months, bringing the British sense of fashion to Oz at affordable prices, with free shipping. With such a great customer base down under, the boohoo.com team have decided to go exclusive in our market, bringing us a collection of pieces for the Aussie summer that channel all the trends we know and love – released for our season!!

The first trend collection will go live TODAY, September 9, and feature the Monoscope trend, with black, white and grey prints and geometry, stripes and bold pops of colour in lime, orange and pink. Next up will be the Porcelain collection, with a colour palette of black silver and blue, teamed with white. I LOVE the blue and white floral designs, and the laser cut detailing. Sublime. Finally, high summer takes off with De Janeiro, a collection with a strong emphasis on print and colour pops. Tropical palms, tribal and the ‘neon lava’ print are the stars of this collection and I want it all.

Lot’s of 70s shapes can be seen through the three collections, and with prices ranging from $26 to $65, it really is affordable for everyone. Pick pieces from your fave local designer, and team with boohoo.com accessories, or vice versa. It’s the best time to shop (support the economy!!) so get out there and spend your hard earned dollars.
