Very Special Kids Sale

It’s an event I look forward to each June and November, and I’m thrilled that it’s happening this Saturday!! The bi-annual Very Special Kids Fashion Sale is on this weekend, Saturday 28 July, and again the sale will be full of bargains and fab finds, all in aid of Very Special Kids.

VerySpecialKidsFashionSale13
You might remember some of the awesome finds from the past – a Jayson Brunsdon dress, Dolce & Gabbana heels, Mimco purses…. so many awesome things to buy FOR LESS THAN $50!! The sale will take place at the Malvern Town Hall, on Glenferrie Road, Malvern from 9am, and a gold coin donation will get you in the door.

Fashion 3
Inside, you will find new clothing from Australian and European retailers – Mens, Womens and childrens – plus shoes and accessories. Jeans are always a top seller, and if you are prepared to go hard, you will find a precious jewel or two among the racks and racks of clothes. A few top tips for making the most of your visit (from my experience!!)

– Go EARLY. The queue starts forming around 8.30am. The early bird gets the worm!
– Wear light, loose fitting clothing, and underwear you are happy to show off. The change rooms are communal, so if you are a bit shy, wear boyleg briefs and a singlet, and try things on over clothes. No one wants you wresting to get your skinny jeans off either, so wear something easy to get in and out of.
– Take a bag that you can wear across the body. Two hands rummaging racks are better than one.
– Take cash. The queue to pay on credit card is always longer than the queue to pay with cash.
– Know your partners/kids clothing sizes before you go, so you are not holding three shirts whilst phoning a friend to check a size.
– If in doubt, grab it. Once you get to the change rooms you can make a decision, but if you leave it on the rack, chances are it was a one off and it’ll be gone.

Very Special Kids Fashion Sale
Above all, have fun and be polite! Everyone is here for a bargain so smile and don’t be afraid to ask that girl with the red dress where she found it. You might just be lucky enough to find another!

Fabulous Frock Friday

There is nothing like a fabulous frock (especially on a Friday). The mere sight of a gorgeous creation that can make you smile; that sparkles with the slightest turn and can make the wearer feel nothing short of Princess like for as long as the fabric envelopes her.

My friend Felicity and I are massive fans of the frock. The extravagance of it. The oversized and ridiculous. The impractical and the ethereal. All the frocks.

So we started a new instagram account to pay homage to those fabulous frocks: instagram.com/frockinggoodfrock. Come and sigh with us at the sheer beauty of these creations. Ooh and ahh as we post dresses that defy gravity and girls who make art wearable.

We give good frock.

The New Renault Clio

When I first announced to my family that I had a new (serious) boyfriend, the first question my Dad asked was, ‘what does he drive?’ The status of ones car is a big deal in our household. There is even an urban myth that Mum only went out with Dad at the age of 17 because he had a car – cars are an important part of our family.

To me, a car has always been about getting from A to B, and having enough space in the back for my shopping bags. I’ve never had much of a choice in colour (apparently that whole red goes faster thing isn’t true anyways) and decisions have been made mostly based on cost and safety.

Renault One
For the past few weeks, I’ve been driving a new Renault Clio, and I’ve come to discover that there are SO many more important things to consider when buying a car than just shopping space and the colour (although I’m here to tell you, the French Blue is divine and the boot is HUGE).

The new Clio is dead sexy to look at it, and a pretty sweet ride too. It’s zippy and cute and while its clearly designed for the ladies, my boyfriend was the first to grab the keys, given the opportunity. It has all the appeal of a hatch or liftback, while being ‘tough’ enough to appeal to the other half.

ella

amyMy nieces do their best to sell the car, while Dad checks things out inside.

One of the first things you’ll notice is the lack of back door handles (they are hidden near the window – clever aesthetics!) and the credit card sized key that starts the car with a button. This took some getting used to, as the ‘key’ fits into the centre console of the car, whereas I suspect your current or last car uses a standard key inserted to the right of the steering wheel.

There are other differences too. Being European, the indicator is on the left, and the speed is recorded on a digital display, rather than a traditional speedometer. The lights and windscreen wipers are both automatic, and the car will tell you if the person in the backseat isn’t yet wearing their seatbelt (clever!!).

honey

keyChecking things out at my favourite local, Honey. Clio is great for zipping about the city!

Plus, when you leave the car – it knows! And will automatically lock when you take the key a few metres out of range. This was most excellent when I tried to carry half a dozen shopping bags, my handbag, laptop and house keys….

But the biggest difference, and most valuable thing about the Renault Clio (in my opinion!) is the fuel economy. After driving the car for nearly two weeks – close to 700kms – I was beginning to worry that perhaps the fuel gauge was broken. But no, this car simply has the most unprecedented fuel economy – even when refilling at $1.40p/L, the cost was only $52. Compared to my current car, the Renault Clio would save me a fortune in petrol costs alone.

country

I drove the automatic transmission model, and noted that the gear changes felt a bit like being in a manual, giving the driver the feeling of power without compromising on the environmentally friendly features of the car. A light just above the steering wheel glows green when running at its best efficiency, fading to olive, orange and yellow when you are accelerating or braking too hard.

My time with the car has been nothing short of a blast. We’ve been to the country, put up the permit sign at our block of land, had drinks, been to coffee and chauffeured people home – and to the airport! The one thing I found odd? The built in navigator doesn’t use a QWERTY keyboard. But just like it takes getting used to having the indicator on the opposite side, so too I got used to this.

house

Final notes? Dad approves. And really, when you are thinking about buying a new car, it’s important that your folks are on side.

Massive thanks to Renault for entrusting me with this gorgeous car for the past weeks, and to Soda Communications for making everything wonderful. Special mention to the City of Port Phillip, who took three weeks to send me a visitor parking permit, which arrived just before I returned the car. Kudos.

I drove the new Clio Dynamique which has lot’s of bits and bobs and shiny things, and retails for $23,290.
The Clio Authentique (base model) starts at $16,790.

Uni Hill for Winter Warmth

With my friend Felicity due to give birth at any minute, I headed over to Bundoora late last week to call in for a cuppa and to have a sneaky peek at what the Uni Hill Factory Outlets had in store for me this month. With winter just around the corner (don’t let that spring snap fool you!), I was on a mission to find some warmer things to keep me and my family cosy this season.

Having realised the day before that my duvet (or doona, but duvet sounds fancier) was coming up to ten years old (don’t worry, I have WASHED it during that time), I thought it might be high time it got replaced. We were using a microfibre version, but a little internet research told me feather and down was the way to go. I headed to Sheridan first up to quiz the sales lady about what she thought would best suit my bed.

Sheridan Queen Wool Quilt

After I detailed how I was freezing most nights, whilst my partner sprawled with his legs on top of the sheets, the girl in the store explained that a wool quilt was our best option for comfort all year round. As a natural fibre, wool is temperature regulating and has a better capacity to keep me warm while keeping him cool. Happiness all round. The Sheridan queen size 500gsm wool quilt was $189.95, but the store was offering 25% off – woo hoo!!

At the counter, the sales girl asked if I might like to become a Sheridan VIP – and with it, another 25% came off my quilt!! My super lush new duvet was now under $100 and I was rapt. Over the weekend we put it on the bed and were able to rid the room of the ugly grey blanket that has given us extra warmth the past two years. Best decision EVER.

Cotton On Kids, Novo, Form Home, Pure ZoneClockwise from top: Cotton On Kids gumboots $29.95; Oversized Mugs at Form Home, 60% off; Black brogues at Novo – Buy 1, get a 2nd pair for $10, and Jersey sheet sets at Pure Zone, from $40 (S).

Onto prettier things, I ogled the cutest gumboots for little feet at Cotton On Kids (wishing that my friend would have her baby so I can start buying cute little things!) and swooned over Pantone esque mugs at Form Home. Some dashing sparkly brogues caught my eye at Novo shoes, while the jersey sheet sets at Pure Zone floated my boat (and made me think how well they would go with my new quilt!)

But today my mission was things for winter, and for a man who is so hot whilst sleeping, my boyfriend has mentioned several times how cold he is during the day. At Giordano I snapped up a snazzy charcoal grey cardigan, complete with elbow patches. While it sounds like my boyfriend is a sixty year old science teacher, I assure you that the jacket has street cred and will win brownie points for any girl who brings it home. Onto Elwood Apparel, where I spotted a checked shirt that I knew he’d love (and another 5% off for signing up as a VIP!).

Elwood and Giordano

I am very popular this week. 🙂

So in case you had forgot, winter officially starts NEXT WEEK, on June 1st. Best you get yourself to Uni Hill for some layers before the cold really sets in!

A blog birthday

Five years ago, I was living in Mooroolbark. I worked full time. I was single. I hadn’t travelled, I’d never set foot in a Chanel store and I’d never bought anything from ASOS.

In two weeks, this little piece of the interwebs will have been around for five years. Every year, (one, two, three and four) I’ve reiterated how it all started out, and where I am today, so it’s no surprise that I thought thats how I’d start this time round. But you’ve heard it all before. And your time is worth more than that.

So, in two weeks, whilst everyone is celebrating the Queens Birthday weekend, I’ll be celebrating my blog birthday weekend. It’ll be as big as when I turned 30. Stay tuned.

On Track 2014

This month is all about supporting charity through fashion it seems, with another sartorially inspired calendar event to raise funds and awareness of headspace, the National Youth Mental Health Foundation. On Track 2014 is presented by the Whitehouse Institute of Design and will promote the importance of speaking up and seeking help when dealing with a mental health issue.

Screen Shot 2014-05-15 at 11.21.18 am

I am someone who has had to deal with my own mental health issues in the past, namely anxiety, but I also have friends and family members who are battling, or have beaten, depression. While it’s great to be able to support these events with cold hard cash, awareness is truly the best thing for sufferers and our community, enabling both to seek help when it’s needed – the right kind of help!!

On Track 2014 will take place on May 28, transforming the venue into an athletics track where guests will be able to enjoy a range of entertainment including a fashion show, live music, interactive art, pop up stalls and a photo booth. Of course the athletics track, with the various ‘events’ such as long jump, high jump and hurdles, are representative of the real life barriers associated with mental illness and it is hoped that the interactive and fun environment will help remove the stigma surrounding the conversation of mental health.

For more information, visit facebook. Tickets are available at Moshtix and are $50.

If you need to speak to someone about your own mental health issues, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Wicked In Oz!

Last night the green carpet was rolled out and crowds of suitably dressed punters headed to the Regent Theatre for the opening night of the tenth anniversary of Wicked the Musical. I didn’t see the show first time round so was excited to be attending with my Mum, on the eve of Mother’s Day.

Even Mum commented on how dressed up everyone was, with a great number of people in green (or emerald!).

WIC_COULDNTBEHAPPIER_JeffBusby

The show started right on time and to be honest, I really wasn’t sure of what the story would be. Touted to tell the ‘Untold Story of the Witches of Oz’, I wasn’t sure I wanted one of my favourite childhood stories messed with. Within three hours I’d be singing its praises, for the show is a spectacle in all facets of singing, dancing, costume, staging and performance.

WIC_FALLENHOUSE_JeffBusby

Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, are the stars of the show, starting the tale as school chums and detailing their journey til the arrival of Dorothy in the land of Oz. There are lot’s of lessons to be learnt in watching the production – that of bullying and friendship, love and loss – but the frequent laughs and delightful voices of the shows stars carry the tale and we learn much about the characters true personalities.

WIC_GLINDA_JeffBusby

WIC_ELPHABA_JeffBusby

Original Wicked stars Lucy Durack and Jemma Rix portray Glinda and Elphaba, whose characters I could both relate to – Glinda for her love of shoes and Elphaba who is often told to stop talking! Glinda’s character bares an uncanny resemblance to Reese Witherspoons Legally Blonde, while the caricature of the Wizard struck me as very Tywin Lannister.

The costumes and sets are beyond amazing and throughout the production, I could see how the whole thing tied back to the film – sheer brilliance. If The Wizard of Oz was one of your favourite childhood memories, take your Mum or your sister – or your best friend – and enjoy this very clever tale in all it’s glory.

Also starring Reg Livermore – who I fondly associate with ‘Our House’ from my childhood too!
