Catwalk Circus

It seems like just yesterday that every night was booked out with a fashion event, but things have been a little quiet since the year started. While we are all looking forward to LMFF kicking off on March 14 (about 55 days to go!) there is still plenty of events to get your fashion hit at prior, one of them being Catwalk Circus – a fashion extravaganza with a twist.

Touted as the Fashion highlight of 2011 and hosted by Stephanie Ryan-Smith, Catwalk Circus features extraordinary performances by CircaNica, Pole Divas and Patrick Studios and an extravagant runway show celebrating the creative parameters of how fashion can be showcased and experienced.

The show includes collections from the hottest Australian and New Zealand labels, eccentric dance performances and outrageous jaw dropping acrobatics from 80 performers to create an entertainment extravaganza!

In addition to this, we love an event that supports a cause and this year Catwalk Circus will again be supporting the AIDS Trust of Australia. Live auctions will be held and there will be an opportunity to make a gold coin donation on the night. The funds will deliver essential response services to Australians across the nation living with and affected by HIV and AIDS.

So if you just can’t wait till LMFF, grab a ticket to Catwalk Circus and get your fashion fix on March 1 at the Melbourne Town Hall, from 7pm. Tix from Ticketmaster.

General: $50 online or $65 @ the door
VIP seating $65
Group bookings: $400 per group (10 people)

Onya Aid

It’s raining in Melbourne. Again. I’m complaining because my hair got wet, but while I sit in my apartment writing this piece, it’s hard not to feel insolent and selfish. While I might bemoan the fact that I straightened my locks this morning and now I have – god forbid – frizz, the people of Queensland are not thinking about how their hair looks. Or even if it’s clean.

I have no doubt you have seen the stories; on the news or in the papers. That you’ve heard the radio crosses or seen online the plight of our Sunshine State, currently under metres of water and showing no signs of letting up anytime soon.

Families are living out of community centres, being evacuated from their homes, being forced to abandon their lives for the fear of water – a resource we in Melbourne have in short supply. They must leave their possessions behind, their jobs and treasured memories, to seek shelter on higher ground with family or friends outside of the flood affected zone, or flee to another state altogether.

While I complain about the rain, it was only two short years ago that Victoria faced its own natural disaster. Bushfires that killed hundreds; wiping out towns and destroying homes and lives.

Our weather might be what brings in the tourists – the recent Oprah tour is evidence of this – but for those of us who live by the ‘beautiful one day, perfect the next’ philosophy, it’s sometimes hard to accept what we’ve got.

We complain when it rains. We complain when it’s hot. We complain when it’s windy. A very famous poem reads ‘of drought and flooding rains’, and it seems Australia lives up to this every day. But for those of us not directly affected by these tragedies, surely we need to be a little bit more accepting of our, for the most part, pretty awesome country.

I can’t fathom being in the situation taking place in Queensland at the moment. I can’t imagine the pain caused by something you have no control over, the thought of losing everything you have worked your whole life for. Similarly, I know people who were involved with the bushfires – friends, family and volunteers – and even hearing their stories, I still cannot believe that the tragedy took place just an hour down the road.

‘Her beauty and her terror’ is an apt description of our nation. Our weather patterns over the past years have been erratic, yes, but I still believe we live in the lucky country. Flooding rains and devastating fires might be something we have little or no control over, but we do come together in the most extraordinary way when they occur.

This week’s telethon for the Queensland flood victims raised over $10 million dollars in little over 2 hours while two years ago, the bushfires spurned a similar outpouring of support. You can’t say we don’t help a mate in need.

And while at the moment the tears in Queenslanders outweigh the smiles, you can feel their passion for the country and the land when they are being interviewed and you know they will be back. The same was said for the bushfire victims. ‘We will rebuild’ is the mantra of a community. Of many communities.

So what can I do, sitting in my apartment, dry and with perfectly straight locks?

Lemon Lime LOVE

As you are all, I am sure, very well aware, the Slurpee is pretty much a summer institution. And the clever 7 Eleven folks decided that maybe we were all a bit bored with coke and raspberry and introduced the idea of trying out some new stuff.

New stuff this week? Lemon Lime and Bitters. Now your fave refreshing designated driver beverage is available as a cool icy treat. And it’s good. Real good.

It’s just starting to heat up in Melbourne, so make sure you head down and try out this limited edition treat. Or maybe we should start a petition to get it in as a full time Slurpee flavour? Sign up here.

It’s been a while…

Happy New Year fashionistas! Hoping you had a wonderful break and are raring to go for 2011? I worked through but was lucky enough to spend a few days with my family by the beach (not that I left the house to go to the beach, I slept a lot and watched old movies – on VHS!!).

But now the new year is here and it seems just 5 days in that we have been at it for months already. I haven’t even bought any shoes this year yet! But I did pick up a few other bits and bobs on my travels over the past weeks that I thought I would share with you.

David Lawrence had a handbag I was dead keen on. I swear there was a puddle outside the Collins Street store where I drooled everytime I walked by. It had the charm of an over the arm strap with the sophistication of a work satchel. And it was leather. Sigh. And it was $280.

Um, no. Thanks. It is still just a bag. So I went to Country Road (30% off storewide) and picked up Capri pants and a skirt for work. I ventured past Ojay (40% off storewide, including sale items!) and procured a skirt and a dress. I shopped at ASOS.com and found a dress, skirt, 2 tees, a watch and 2 pairs of sunnies. It was a very Merry Christmas for me.

I stayed away from the Boxing Day sales. I figured I’d had my fun before Christmas and it wasn’t like I needed anything. Not really anyways. But working between Christmas and New Year is a dangerous time for a shopaholic alone in the city and I was alone the day I wandered past David Lawrence and noticed the big red signs in the window.

Fifty. Per. Cent. Off.

EVERYTHING.

The bag was mine! For only $139! A far more reasonable purchase and almost like a shopping karma reward for not going to the boxing day sales and for holding out when I knew I didn’t need it, only wanted it! Success! Or so I tell myself.

That very same day I called into Flight Centre to peruse the Paris plans.

The bag should be considered my last purchase for at least a few months. If I learnt anything from Dry July (for those of you who missed my shopping ban, check it out here), I know I can save (or rather, not spend) when I have to, so this is it. Paris or bust.

Or, I will be bust if I don’t stop buying things!

Happy New Year folks! What did you get at the sales?

Merry Christmas!

For someone who is usually the annoying, carol singing Christmas loving kid, this year has been very quiet indeed. Not on the ‘my life’ front – that’s been pretty manic – but in terms of decorations and cheer. This year I just can’t find it.

Perhaps I’m getting too old or maybe I’m just tired after such a full on year but in any case, i’ll still be eating turkey and drinking champagne in 12 hours time.

I’d like to wish everyone in the blogosphere a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. To everyone who I tweet with, have met at a fashionable function or have had the pleasure of calling a friend in 2010 – thank you and best wishes for 2011.

Sarah’s Style Emporium will take a little break over the next week – I will still be working the 9 to 5 while you are all reading chick lit on a beach somewhere so I’ll save up the new stuff for January when you are all back on deck!

2011 will be big – there are great things in store for me, which in turn I hope means you all get to enjoy reading about my antics and come along for the ride.

Here is a little festive fashion for you. Don’t ever let me catch any of you walking down the street in these.

Merry Christmas!

Sarah xxx

It’s Christmas – who else is tired of shopping for other people? As a seasoned shopping pro, I love spending time in the stores, but always find myself spending more on me than on my loved ones.
Don’t tut tut at me just yet – after spending more on myself, I generally feel guilty and spend twice as much on my family and friends. It’s a vicious circle.

Which is why this year I’ve done a fair bit of my Christmas shopping online. Sure, the temptation is sort of removed. Sort of.  But it’s also SO easy!! Pay with Paypal and delivery to your door? What more could a girl want?

In the city of blinding lights…

I know this pic isn’t blinding anyone with it’s lights, but it’s my new desktop and I love it. I could be seeing this in person in exactly four months. Watch this space fashionistas. x

Sail Away

This year I went to Flemington for Spring Racing for this first time. To Werribee for the Polo for the first time. And next week I will head to Sandringham for the sailing. For the first time.

It seems sailing is the new fashion sport du jour – and you can be a part of it.

The ISAF Sailing World Cup, Sail Melbourne, this year has a big focus on fashion and
lifestyle. Running from 13-18 December at Sandringham Yacht Club, Sail Melbourne brings
together the finest sailors from across the globe. The event encapsulates the glamour and excitement synonymous with the world of sailing.

How could I say no? And how can you be there?

Ladies from across the globe will soak up the glitz and glamour of the sailing lifestyle with the event’s official Ladies Day, on Wednesday 15 December. As the sailing elite takes to the water, guests will be invited to sit back and enjoy the sumptuous food, wine and fashion and a
host of entertainment all set to the spectacular backdrop of Port Phillip Bay.

Ladies will receive gorgeous gift bags and have the opportunity to win some fabulous prizes. Amongst all the glamour on Ladies Day there is a serious purpose, with money raised going towards the important work of the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). Celebrity stylist and fashion personality Amber Renae will MC at the event, and “face of the event” television presenter Klara Lisy will also be in attendance.

As a fashionista and Melbournite, I feel it’s my duty to be at this event. It’s totally up your alley too.
