Pruntastic

Prunes are usually something associated with the elderly and those with bowel *ahem* issues.

So if I was to tell you that prunes can help reduce the effect of ageing and help maintain healthy skin would you try it?

I am more a fan of the whole fruit on cereal deal but this week I was sent a bottle of Sunraysia Prune Juice with claims a ‘shot a day’ will keep the doctor away.

Good for your bones and containing more antioxidants than any other fruit or veg, Prune Juice does more than just keep you regular.

Accompanied by its own shot glass and exfoilating gloves (cleansing from the inside out, get it?!) the Prune Juice was the quite the topic of coversation with my dinner guest last night.

As is customary, guests should always go first and Miss E was up to the challenge.

Throwing back her head, the Prune Juice was down the hatch and not entirely unpleasant, by all reports.

Take the shot a day challenge and revitalise from the inside out.

Beggar Man Thief

This week I celebrated my second anniversary in South Melbourne. I remember when I moved here, vividly, wondering if this sleepy little suburb would feel like home, how long I would stay, and if I would be happy here.

I can quite safely say I never want to live anywhere else. Ever. My favourite places are here and although my favourite people might be a little further away, I love the convenience of being able to walk everywhere, the lake, the market and shops.

One shop in particular holds much appeal for a good friend of mine. Beggar Man Thief has been in South Melbourne for a shorter time than I but has established itself as the go-to boutique for boys in the know. Top brand shoes that are fashionably understated, presented in a stylish store with a welcoming presence.

Scott Lewis and Marc Godfrey

Started by Marc Godfrey and Scott Lewis (formerly of Ozmosis fame), the shoe enthusiasts say their store is for the guy who is fashion conscious, but not fashion fixated. Guys who are intelligent and understated. Any man, really, who appreciates special things.

Beggar Man Thief stocks some of the highest quality footwear in the world, including Grenson and Loake, while locally, Andrew McDonald and Tristan Blair fly the flag for Aussie designers.

Loake Brogues $395

With such a unique selling proposition and a steady stream of regulars established in the South Melbourne local, Godfrey and Lewis are this month launching a little brother to Beggar Man Thief, The Canny Man, just around the corner.

The Canny Man pops up at the South Melbourne Market, from August 26, and will offer shoe shine and repairs, plus lifestyle products for the boys and end of season deals from Beggar Man Thief.

Stonnington Spring Fashion

I’ll be working at Flemington for the Spring Racing Carnival again this year. As much fun as this is, it does mean coming up with four outfits, one suited to each day of the carnival.

The Stonnington Spring Fashion Runway gives fashionistas a look at the trends for the upcoming season and the opportunity to mix and mingle at the start of the fashion season.

The Fashion Hall of Fame is set to induct two new fashionistas – The Age’s Fashion Editor Janice Breen Burns and iconic couturier Victoria Cascajo – while four up and coming fashion designers will showcase their wares on the runway.

In addition to the runway gala, a Fashion industry Forum will take place a day prior to the parade, giving the industry the chance to debate the issues facing retail.

So many events – and this is just the beginning! Bring on Spring.

Stonnington Fashion Industry Forum, Wednesday 31 August 7am to 9am $28 (Students free)
Stonnington Fashion Hall of Fame and Runway, Thursday 1 September 6.30pm $35

This year Stonnington has a blog, twitter and facebook as well – keep in touch to hear annoucements on designers and speakers!

Eating and Drinking Guide to Melbourne

Last week a package arrived in the mail. Now, since I usually get stuff sent to my office and this package arrived at home, I was curious. Who had my address? What had I bought? (I do this a lot, buying stuff online and forgetting about it!) Opening the package, I was surprised and delighted to see the Hardie Grant Eating and Drinking Guide to Melbourne.

You might wonder why I was so thrilled to receive this book? Well, it’s because I helped write it. For real. My name is inside the cover and everything. Ok, so it’s a few pages in. And there are a dozen other names. But it doesn’t matter. My name is there. In black and white.

But I’m guessing you want to know about the book. It’s pretty awesome (and I’m not just saying that because I contributed.) It is. 700 bars, restaurants and cheap and cheerful spots to eat at in Melbourne. 700!! And they are broken down into areas and type. With an index. And maps!!

I wrote some of the ones around South Melbourne, Albert Park and Toorak but the book covers everything – SOBO and NOBO (Melbourne goes all NY on us!) which is South of Bourke St and North of Bourke St, Inner North, South, East and West, AND Outer North, South, East and West. Phew!

It will take you 12 months to get through all 700 places in the book, and you will need to go out a minimum of twice a week to get through them all before next year’s edition comes out. I suggest you get started tomorrow.

You can pick up the book from all good book stores (I have ALWAYS wanted to say that!) from September 1, or I have a few up my sleeve to give away. I’ll even sign them for you. (Seriously) (No, really, I won’t. Promise).

All you have to do is comment here (with your email address!) and tell me your favourite spot to eat or drink around Melbourne and why. I promise to try them all. I’ll pick the winners out of a hat on September 2. Good Luck!

The Hardie Grant Eating and Drinking Guide to Melbourne RRP $29.95
(None of the proceeds go to me – or the other contributors – we are 100% independent!)

We all love ITA!

As an aspiring writer, there are three women whom I admire.

Mia Freedman, Lisa Wilkinson and ita Buttrose span three generations of Cleo magazine but individually they are amazing women who always aspired to greater heights.

Mia Freedman and Lisa Wilkinson

They are inspirational and I hold them up as my heroes.

You may remember I wrote a letter to my sixteen year old self after a Marie Claire article on the book Elton John was writing, but it is Ita’s letter than I recently enjoyed reading, and understanding.

A road map for life, Ita’s career is something I can only ever dream of for myself. It amuses me that you could write a letter to your sixteen year old self every day and have it be different, based on the experiences you have had that have shaped your thinking.

Ita’s letter reached me on a day when I felt the same way.

Ita’s letter thanks to ninemsn.

Dear Ita,

Well, look at you! Just 16 and already a cadet journalist! That’s one in the eye for all those doomsday merchants who kept telling you that journalism cadetships were never given to anyone under 17 and you were wasting your time trying to impress the boss with your enthusiasm.

Throughout your career, there always will be people prepared to tell you that you can’t or shouldn’t do something you’ve set your heart on. By all means listen to what they have to say, but if the drum you hear is beating loudly, follow it.

Trust your gut feelings and never lose your belief in yourself. Remember, no one else will ever dream your dreams or understand what drives you.

Your life will be full of detours, but it will never be boring. You will climb some awesome mountains. It won’t always be smooth sailing, though. Sometimes, projects and love won’t turn out the way you hope and, occasionally, you’ll find the going tough, but your inner strength and self-confidence will always get you through.

Ita in her younger years

Remember, tough times don’t last, tough people do. Right now, you have no idea that it’s a man’s world, but when you decide to branch out of the women’s pages of Sydney’s Daily and Sunday Telegraphs, where you did your journalism training, some of your male colleagues will not welcome you.

Their hostility will come as a bit of a shock at first. Some men will resent your ability and even be jealous of it. That’s a sobering lesson to learn, but it is men’s insecurity, not yours, that’s the problem.

You’ll even be accused of “frightening” men. It’s hard to believe, isn’t it, but it seems some men are terrified by talented, intelligent women. What kind of mothers did they have, I wonder? Make sure you don’t raise your son to have that kind of blinkered attitude. I know you won’t!

Cherish your friendships. Loyal friends who you can trust are worth their weight in gold. Some friends you thought were close friends will let you down. It will hurt, but it’s not the end of the world. You will come to understand that duplicity is part of life’s rich tapestry.

Never carry a chip on your shoulder about some of the low blows you receive. People who do only become bitter and are distracted from pursuing their goals.

Never lose your curiosity, never lose your optimism and never lose your sense of humour. Laughter keeps us sane. Keep learning. Constantly challenge your brain.

We’re only here once, so make the most of every moment and always live life to the fullest. Never have regrets. They’re a waste of time.

You can never turn back the clock or change any of the steps you have taken and everything you do and experience will shape you into the woman you will eventually become. I hope you’ll like her. I do.

Much love, Ita.

Prospect 360

Sometimes a university qualification is simply not enough… and I should know.

Avid readers of this blog will know the hard yards I put in to get ahead in the fashion writing game, the hours that I am sometimes writing posts and the endless hours (and dollars!) I spend getting to and from events, always wearing something fabulous. The volunteering, the working for free, the networking – all to follow a dream of one day writing for a printed publication.

Prospect 360 offers people like me a look into the fashion industry from an insider’s perspective. The Prospect 360 fashion seminar is an opportunity for not only budding fashion writers, but those of you who aspire to be stylists and fashion publicists as well.

Kate Gaskin, Stylist and contributing editor, The Age; Emily Power, Fashion Journalist and regular on The Circle; and Anthea O’Conner, formerly Vogue Australia (Melbourne) and Westfield Ambassador. (Not pictured: Melissa Hoyer, Social Commentator, Sunrise and Grazia, radio regular)

Its a chance to start building your own contact book and where better to start than with in demand fashion media Melissa Hoyer, Anthea O’Connor, Emily Power and Kate Gaskin. These lovely ladies make up the panel for Prospect 360 and will share their tricks and tips, dos and don’ts on how to get your foot-in-the-door of the fashion media industry.

I attended this seminar a number of years ago and found the experience invaluable in getting started with my blog and industry. You will too.

House of Snowball

I am going skiing this weekend so what better time (and tie in) to talk about House of Snowball, a chic Melbourne duo designing lace trimmed cuffs just around the corner from me.

Far from the snowfields of Hotham and Falls Creek, mother and daughter design team Louise and Kristie Coakley are creating their own kind of magic in South Melbourne – and it’s going straight to the top.

Featured in Vogue UK’s September editions – the ONLY edition anyone wants to be photographed for – Louise and Kristie are thrilled to report their designs have been worn on two well know models and shot by the fabulous Mario Testino.

The House of Snowball girls tell us about their gorgeous new Parisienne style boutique and salon on Coventry St, South Melbourne, that will re-open for the new season on September 2.

Featuring an exquisite new collection of one-off couture pieces for the Snowball Maison de Couture line, as well as the House of Snowball ready-to-wear and accessory collection, the store will also have co-ordinating couture accessories, such as the cuffs, collars, neckpieces and cummerbunds.

The dramatic cuffs featured in Vogue were created using a mixture of vintage laces and modern silks including a pair made with lace from as far back as the 1890’s. They are a great example how small and beautiful couture items can be incorporated into a modern wardrobe.

Kookai for Look.Stop.Shop

It wasn’t so long ago that I was walking the halls at RMIT studying Visual Merchandising and other fashion related subjects.

VM was one of the more enjoyable subjects, mostly because it was creative, but I am sure in all my time at RMIT I never created anything quite like th Look.Stop.Shop windows at Kookai, Melbourne Central.

The students who created this window have won the public vote for best display in the Look.Stop.Shop program (from 29 windows!) and Kookai are celebrating by allowing the students to reinstall their display from today.

The work was inspired by Kookai’s Spring Summer collection – I only hope we get to see a bit of Spring Summer action sometime soon!
